Earlier today the world’s most famous groundhog saw his shadow. This annual event, which is a German tradition, was held at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Legend suggests that we are in for another 6 weeks of winter weather!
This can be disheartening news as we all dream of warmer weather, and seeing trees and flowers add color to our world. If you are experiencing “winter blues” here are a few ideas on ways to beat them:
Ø Find little things that cheer you up:
o Treat yourself to new flannel pajamas, a polar fleece robe or a fluffy pair of slippers.
o Keep throws draped over chairs and across the foot of beds for easy access. Use the brightly colored ones to add a splash of color to your décor.
o Invest in a set of flannel sheets.
o Soak in a hot, fragrant bath.
o Stock up on gourmet coffee, tea, hot chocolate or apple cider for a warm treat.
o Plan a party, consider a tropical theme!
o Plan your summer vacation.
o Plan your garden, research new flowers, fruits, vegetables to add to your garden.
Ø Try something new (accomplishment brings satisfaction and a sense of renewal):
o Start a daily journal
o Try new recipes
o Work on something challenging, like a jigsaw puzzle.
o Check out the library for books or DVD’s you have been meaning to read/watch.
o Start a new hobby – scrapbooking, sketching
o Get a bird feeder, a book, binoculars and watch birds.
Ø Change your interior décor:
o Evaluate your lighting – try higher wattage bulbs, relocate lamps, or find ones not currently in use to add light to rooms.
o Add rich warm colors: burgundy and gold. Add brass accents.
o Make generous use of candles, especially pillar types.
o Open your blinds and curtains during daylight hours, close when the sun goes down.
o Add fresh flowers.
Keeping busy helps keep the blues at bay. Remember to take care of yourself as well – get adequate rest, eat and exercise regularly. Get outdoors to walk a dog or just explore your neighborhood, even when it’s cold – you will be amazed how different things look at this time of year!

I like the flannel pajamas and tropical theme party ideas! I think we’ve all had enough snow and ice and frigid temperatures this winter!
I can’t wait for this Friday and Saturday – it will actually be over 40 degrees!
