It seems like everywhere you look these days, Pittsburgh is making the news for its strong commitment to higher education.

For instance, Carnegie Mellon University recently reported that a record number of prospective students applied for the 2011-2012  school year.

Located in the heart of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon is a private research university that is well known for its innovative research.  In fact, in 2006, Newsweek named it one of the “new Ivies.”

By Feb. 1, 2011, the Office of Undergraduate Admission at Carnegie Mellon had received 16,497 applications for the Fall 2011 semester, which was a 6.5 percent increase over the previous record.

That record was set last year, when 15,496 prospective students applied for Fall 2010.

Not far away, the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Law program also recently made the news when it launched a cutting-edge program that aims to teach future lawyers the values of entrepreneurship and business development.

Known as the Innovation Practice Institute, the program will prepare law students for working in a tech start-up industry.  As Justine Kasznica, executive director of the Institute, recently told the local Biz Journal, there is a need for lawyers with that particular skill set.
